A generator is the cheapest way to get real power into a house during a long outage, and the one piece of backup equipment that can kill you if you get it wrong.

This section covers sizing, starting with the question that decides it: what it takes to run a refrigerator, a freezer and a furnace blower at the same time without tripping anything. Then fuel consumption per hour by fuel type, safe placement distances, continuous run limits, and what a transfer switch or an interlock kit costs against what it actually does. Portable against standby over ten years. Inverter against conventional. Dual fuel against tri fuel.

What you will not find here is wiring instructions. This site explains what exists, what it costs and which code applies, then sends you to a licensed electrician. Backfeeding is covered only to explain why it kills people, including utility linemen. Safety figures come from the CPSC, the NFPA and the NEC.
