This policy explains what WattBackup collects, why, who else gets to see it, and what you can do about it. It is written to satisfy the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation, Spanish data protection law, and the US state privacy statutes that apply to our readers.
1. Who is responsible for your data
The data controller for this website is:
- Alvaro Melgar Merenciano
- Spanish tax identification number (NIF): 49793712T
- Calle Abeto 34, 30100 El Puntal, Murcia, Spain
- Email: melgarmerencianoalvaro@gmail.com
The controller is established in Spain, so Spanish and EU law apply to this site regardless of where you are reading it from.
2. What we collect
2.1 Information you give us
If you use the contact form we receive the name, email address and message you type into it. That is the only form on this site and it is the only place we ask you for anything.
2.2 Information collected automatically
Our hosting provider records standard server logs: IP address, date and time, the page requested, referrer and browser user agent. These are generated by the web server for security and troubleshooting and are not used to build a profile of you.
2.3 Information collected by cookies
Analytics and advertising cookies are only set after you consent to them through the consent banner. Details of every cookie, its purpose and its lifetime are in the cookie policy.
3. Why we process it, and on what legal basis
| Purpose | Data | Legal basis (GDPR Art. 6) |
|---|---|---|
| Answering your message | Contact form fields | Consent, Art. 6(1)(a) |
| Keeping the site up and secure | Server logs | Legitimate interest, Art. 6(1)(f) |
| Understanding which articles are read | Analytics cookies | Consent, Art. 6(1)(a) |
| Serving and measuring advertising | Advertising cookies and identifiers | Consent, Art. 6(1)(a) |
| Meeting legal obligations | As required | Legal obligation, Art. 6(1)(c) |
4. Advertising
WattBackup is funded by display advertising. At the time of writing no advertising is being served on this site. When it is, it will work as follows and this section applies from that point.
- Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies, including the DoubleClick
DSIDandIDEcookies, enables it and its partners to serve ads based on your visit to this and other sites on the internet. - You can review how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising at adssettings.google.com.
- You can opt out of third-party vendor cookies more broadly at optout.aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, no advertising cookie is set until you consent through our consent management platform. If you refuse, you will still see advertising, but it will be non-personalised or limited.
5. Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which articles are read and which are not. Analytics cookies are set only with your consent. Google Analytics 4 does not log or store IP addresses: it uses them in transit to derive an approximate location and then discards them. We do not enable the Google Signals advertising features that would link analytics data to an advertising profile.
6. Who else receives your data
- Hostinger International Ltd — web hosting and server logs.
- Google Ireland Ltd / Google LLC — analytics and, once active, advertising.
- Cloudflare, Inc. — content delivery and denial-of-service protection, where enabled.
We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it with data brokers.
7. International transfers
Some of these providers process data in the United States. Those transfers rely on the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses and, where the provider is certified, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework.
8. How long we keep it
- Contact form messages: up to 24 months after the exchange ends, then deleted.
- Server logs: as retained by the host, typically up to 30 days.
- Analytics data: 14 months. A standard Google Analytics 4 property offers a choice of 2 or 14 months; we keep 14 because this subject is strongly seasonal and shorter retention would make year-on-year comparison impossible.
- Consent records: 24 months, as evidence that consent was given.
9. Your rights
If the GDPR applies to you, you have the right to access your data, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict or object to its processing, to receive it in a portable format, and to withdraw consent at any time without affecting processing already carried out. Withdrawing cookie consent is done through the link in the cookie policy.
To exercise any of these, email melgarmerencianoalvaro@gmail.com. We will respond within one month.
If you believe we have handled your data improperly you may complain to the Spanish supervisory authority, the Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (C/ Jorge Juan 6, 28001 Madrid, aepd.es), or to the supervisory authority where you live.
10. If you live in the United States
Depending on your state — California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas and others — you may have the right to know what personal information is collected, to have it deleted, to correct it, and to opt out of its sale or sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising.
We do not sell personal information for money. Because personalised advertising may still count as “sharing” under those laws, you can opt out here: Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information. We also honour the Global Privacy Control signal sent by your browser.
11. Children
This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
12. Changes to this policy
When this policy changes materially the date at the top changes with it. Advertising is not currently active on this site; when it becomes active, section 4 applies from that date without further notice.
