Strictly necessary
Set without consent because the site cannot function without them. They store your cookie choice and protect forms against abuse. They do not track you.
Statistics
Set only with consent. They tell us which articles are read and where readers leave, in aggregate.
Marketing and advertising
Set only with consent. They allow advertising to be selected, capped and measured. Refusing them does not remove advertising; it makes it non-personalised. No advertising is currently served on this site, so no cookie in this category is set today. The category is documented here because it will apply once advertising is enabled.

How consent is handled
As things stand today, this site sets no cookie at all on an ordinary visit. No analytics is running, no advertising is served, and you can confirm it: load any page in a private window and inspect your cookie jar. The Statistics and Marketing rows below describe what will apply once those services are switched on, not what is happening now.
Consent will be handled by Complianz, which is installed but not yet configured. Before any analytics or advertising script is enabled, the banner will be live and set so that nothing in the Statistics or Marketing categories loads before you accept, the reject button is as prominent as the accept button, refusing is not made harder than accepting, and your choice is recorded so we can demonstrate it was freely given.
Separately, Google requires any publisher serving personalised advertising to readers in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland to use a consent platform that Google has certified and that integrates with the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework. No advertising runs on this site yet. That integration will be in place before any advertising is served, and this page will name the platform in use at that point.
We also implement Google Consent Mode v2, which means that when you refuse, measurement continues in an aggregated, cookieless form rather than tracking you individually.
Controlling cookies in your browser
Independently of the banner, every major browser lets you block or delete cookies in its settings. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may stop parts of this site from working.
